On 17 March 1882, Vittorio Sella, accompanied by the Valtournenche guides Jean-Antoine Carrel, Jean-Battista Carrel and Louis Carrel, became the first to reach the summit of the Matterhorn (4,478 m) during the winter season. The group of mountaineers set off from Breuil at 11.00 pm and reached the summit by following the standard Italian route up the Cresta del Leone. They descended via the Cresta dell’Hornli, where they spent the night in a bivouac.
